In 2002 the European Union (EU) introduced the Directive on Privacy and Electronic Communications. Article 13 of the Directive prohibits the use of personal email addresses for marketing purposes. The Directive establishes the opt-in regime, where unsolicited emails may be sent only with prior agreement of the recipient; this does not apply to business email addresses.
Once you’ve chosen the type of email service you want to utilize, follow a few simple rules to assure success. Target people who are either current customers or who are likely to become customers. Be sure you’re reaching the people who are the decision-makers in their households. For example, if you’re promoting a food product, then target your email direct marketing to the person who buys the groceries and does the cooking. Finally, keep your marketing emails short, to the point and relevant. It’s worth doing some analysis to determine which email marketing services in the UK will best serve your needs.
The problem is that information abundance equals attention scarcity. This is known as attention economics. Your “whales” are those customers who make large or consistent purchases from you. These customers are worth a lot and, better yet, they rarely require discounts to come back. To engage these customers, employ targeted email campaigns that court them and keep them buying—say and showcase how much you value their business, give them an 800 number if it makes sense, or offer a special loyalty program. And don’t forget to gather feedback on what they want to buy so you can sell it to them later.
Your brand is your business’ promise to your customers to deliver a consistent product or service. Creating a voice for your brand and delivering it to your prospective customers on a regular basis is an important first step in establishing your business in their minds. Although there has been some debate about the rule of seven, general consensus is clear that when the right people see your brand multiple times, they are more likely to convert from prospects to customers.

Run sweepstakes or a contest. Although contests can potentially bring in a lot of sign-ups, the inherent downside is the person you’ll attract is looking for free stuff. Because prospective buyers won’t always end up at your website as they start their purchase journey, it’s important that you establish a presence where they may show up. A great way to deliver high-value content to the correct prospects is through content syndication – a content sharing strategy that can be used to promote your whitepapers, articles, news releases, etc. on other websites for greater reach and engagement. Through content syndication, your content appears on third-party sites and newsletters. And because most content syndicators deliver leads directly to your inbox, it’s a great way to keep leads coming in the door.
1. Everyone on your mass emailing list must be an opt-in subscriber. Oh did we say must? Sorry, we meant MUST. If you send unsolicited email messages, that is considered to be spam. You can avoid the dreaded spam label (which will hurt your mass email deliverability and your business's online reputation) by only using opt-in subscriber lists. And include an easy way for subscribers to opt out in each email you send, in case any of them do not wish to receive any more of your email messages.
Easy To Build: Once you have your email template in place, building dedicated sends should be easy. You will generally grab some of the information already on the landing page, make a few tweaks to it and spend most time on nailing down the subject line. Unlike newsletters, dedicated emails don’t need to include many graphical elements to separate the different blocks of text and prioritize information. Here, the entire email revolves around a single message.
Persuade them (lightly) on how you can help them. This should be a light touch, and often at the end of the incentive, on why and how you can help them, and why they should go with them. You could end the course with an open ended email, asking them how they liked it, or you can set up simple conditions to send the leads contact info to your own sales people if they reach the end of the incentive but still haven’t reached out to you.
For example, what’s an R0 F0? Well, it’s someone who has never ordered but just joined your email list. How about an R7 F10 M1000? That’s probably a loyal buyer: 10 orders which total $1,000, the most recent being a week ago. And an R400 F10 M1000? Unfortunately, that’s a former loyal buyer, a “defecting customer,” who’s very far along in the customer lifecycle curve. She’s slipping away and hasn’t bought in more than a year.

And when you create a Google+ event, sending the invite directly sends you into users' email boxes as well. Without having to create lists or collect email addresses, you automatically have access to users' email, but be sure to tap into these resources with care.

If you’re not already a podcast or regular radio show listener, ask around and probe other people in your industry to get a sense of which shows they listen to—or have been interviewed on before.

These emails are dedicated to just one topic and put the call to action front and center. Your readers’ attention won’t be diverted, so they’re more likely to take the action you want them to.
