Email is an “owned” digital marketing channel—that is, the sender fully controls the content and distribution—and typically works best when used to send personal, relevant messages to segmented lists of recipients. Email is an especially important tool in relation to ecommerce, where it’s used for sending transactional, promotional, and lifecycle messages (which we’ll cover in more detail below).

Design: With newsletters, the layout becomes a much more complicated task than it is with dedicated email sends. You’ll have to spend some time deciding on the right placement of images and text, alignment and prioritization of information. Thankfully, there are a bunch of websites out there to help you with these efforts. MailChimp, for instance, offers a package of 36 basic, flexible templates you can use to get started.

Create a sense of urgency. Give customers a reason to act quickly, rather than let the email sit in their inbox. In the example above, the dates of the promotion are apparent. Use active language as well. To tie in with a seasonal promotion, this email from Banana Republic Factory injects a little personality into their CTA language, encouraging readers to “hop to a store.”
For instance, when I searched for “best workflow management software”, the rich snippet goes to FinancesOnline.com, one of the leading B2B review platforms. Imagine your company on this list. There’s a high chance your product will be included in what McKinsey calls the “initial consideration set” leading to the “moment of purchase” during the consumer decision journey. You also outmaneuver competitors in high-value keyword searches. This is crucial considering that Google/CEB study found out 71% of B2B searches start with a generic keyword phrase.

Look for a point of diminishing returns. Where are your campaign investments providing value? At Marketo, inbound strategies like content marketing are the strongest channels, and should be maximized to a point; but beyond that, inbound tactics need to be supplemented with outbound, paid channels in order to create sustainable demand and generate new leads from your website.


One of the benefits native content has over guest blogging is that more overtly promotional content is often tolerated, which may be beneficial for generating leads in the short-term. With native advertising, your ads are front and center. It might be worthwhile to convert those blog post into white papers and setting up a landing page for them. Setting up a landing page takes to much time? Just offer for people to download the post in PDF format in exchange for their email address.
Like with all groups on your social channels, work hard to avoid being overly self-promotional about your offering by sharing tons of links or talking about your product. Allow genuine interest & appreciation to be the driving factor in starting one-on-one conversations with group members, and those will more naturally lead to authentic relationships that could blossom into new-found customers.
